Do you have a blank wall that is just begging for an interesting collection of pictures or prints? You can use that empty space to create a wall gallery, a collection of images that share something in common. That “something” can be anything really, including:
The subject of the image – flowers, cottage pictures, family members, dogs, sunsets, etc.
The media – all photography or all water colour, etc.
Colour scheme – black and white pictures, sepia prints, etc.
Framing or matting – all black frames, round frames, natural wood frames with white mats, etc.
Size – in this case the sizes can be all different or all the same depending on the look you want to achieve
Creating the gallery
The number of pieces you’ll need will depend on the size of the space you have plus the size of the pieces you would like to include. A good way to get an idea of how the collection will look on the wall is to work with an area of floor that is the same size as the wall space you have to use. Lay out the various pieces of artwork on the floor to form your “wall” gallery. When they are arranged on the floor, rather than nailed to your wall, you can easily move the pieces around to get the exact look you want. If you don’t have the floor space to match your wall space, you can create your faux wall gallery on a piece of large paper with cut outs to represent the various artwork. You can also use paper cut outs to act as stand-ins and tape them directly to the wall before starting to actually hang your pieces.
And remember, as with all artwork hanging projects, it’s always best to measure twice and hammer once!
