Create a family heirloom

Solid wood furniture is a great investment if you’re looking for something that can be saved for years to come and passed down through family generations. Because of its sturdy quality and classic design, solid wood furniture can outlast other furniture in both function and style.

But finding – and maintaining – the right piece takes careful thought and regular care. If you’d like to find a piece that can become a family heirloom, keep some of the following tips in mind.

Skip the trends. If you go with a piece that features a classic, traditional design, you can be sure the piece will remain in style for years to come. Trendy, modern furniture may look great right now, but consider how it will look in decades to come.

Consider your family’s tastes. Obviously not everyone in your family will have the same taste in furniture, but if you already own some family heirlooms, consider what type of furniture might complement those pieces.

Think of how it will age. Different woods age in different ways. For example, mahogany may start out as reddish brown, but begin to lose its red tinge over time. Talk to an expert to find out how your piece might look years into the future.

Give your furniture some TLC. Once you’ve found and purchased the right piece, take good care of it so that it doesn’t age or become damaged before its time. With solid wood, this means regularly dusting (dirt can build up on the wood and wear away at it, giving it a dull finish) and making sure your home is wood-friendly. Solid wood is extremely sensitive to humidity levels – too dry and it could crack, too damp and it could swell. Keep your home’s humidity level at 40% to 50% to ensure your wood furniture stays healthy.
