For winter warmth just add colour

Winter is nasty, brutish and anything but short. Everyone has their own way of dealing with the cold, whether it’s a regular supply of hot chocolate, evenings by the fireplace or excessive amounts of clothing that make even the simplest movements difficult. Another way, which is both cost effective and unrestrictive, is to add colour to your home.

Colour has a way of shaping our emotions and mood, even if we don’t realize it outright. A sense of warmth – which means comfort during the long winter months – is achieved through reds, yellows and oranges.

Of course most people wouldn’t dream of repainting every time the seasons change, but certain spaces can, even during the summertime, benefit from a variation of one or more of those three colours. This holds especially true for rooms that don’t see much sunlight or that, during the winter, get the most use.

Dens or home offices, for example, can serve as a comforting retreat with the right colour, if you’re not interested in making over a larger open space. Colour won’t necessarily help you cut down on your heating bill, but it will set off a psychological cue that suggests warmth.

Paint and wallpaper are two wallet-friendly ways to spice things up a little and they don’t go out of style when the sun makes its return. You can also use items and materials to infuse colour. Many homeowners already break out the traditional holiday décor when it gets to be that time of year, but simple pieces like extra throw pillows (on the bed or the couch), covers for dining-room or kitchen chairs, or vases and candle holders add class and comfort.

Blankets make great accessories too: they can serve a practical purpose as a source of heat, or a style purpose to add colour to a cool or neutral surface.
